The Kindergarten homework for our class includes a monthly calendar which is sent home at the beginning of each month beginning in October. Please only initial each box after your child has completed the activity with you, then please complete the reverse side of the calendar, which is a reflective component for you and your child to do together. It is not necessary to turn in the completed work...I use the honor system here in kindergarten, but if there is something you really want me to see, please feel free to send it in. :-)
BUT I DEFINITELY NEED THE ACTUAL CALENDAR BACK SO I CAN SEE THE REVERSE SIDE OF THE CALENDAR TO READ YOUR (AND YOUR CHILD'S) REFLECTION ON THE MONTHLY ACTIVITES.
I also, on occasion, send home handwriting practice worksheets so you can assist your child in letter formation as well. I think this is a very valuable assignment to extend their learning at home with practice, practice, practice.
The purpose of homework in kindergarten is to teach the children responsibility as well as reinforcing the skills we are working on here in class. And I know the children truly enjoy participating in the family centered activites. This also helps the children realize that home and school work as a team, and I LOVE OUR TEAM!!
Probably one of the MOST IMPORTANT things you can do for your child is to read to them daily. It is important for them to see you reading while they track the words you are reading with their "magic pointer finger". This also helps to reinforce the concept of reading from left to right, which in turn effects their writing process, and will get used to writing in the proper direction. I am also sending home a monthly Reading Log. Each night, please have your child color in only 1 of the designs until the calendar is filled up, write the title and author on the back of the log, with the date the book was read, and return that with your monthly homework calendar.
